Alright, so you've figured out the Pelican cooler that fits your needs according to size, weight, portability (wheels), and ice retention - but how do you ensure the maximum possible ice retention?  The answers are fairly simple, but often overlooked.

1. Pre-condition your cooler!

Many people we talk to grab a cooler out of their garage or house then toss some ice and their contents in expecting to get the maximum ice retention.  What's overlooked is the fact that you have a cooler that's anywhere between 15C to 23C+ when starting out.  This means that most of that ice is going to be used to cool the inside of the cooler it self.  You can exponentially increase your ice retention by pre-conditioning your cooler a day before you travel with it to bring it's temperature down to freezing.  Ditch that ice, then put in some fresh ice and your contents.  This wouldn't be as big of a deal with a lower quality and less insulated cooler, but with a Pelican, you're getting industry leading insulation.  So, once your cooler is cooled down, Pelican's 2" of insulation (1.5" on the 14QT) can now do it's job of keep the contents cold for a long time.

2. Ice to Contents Ratio

"Don't Forget the Ice" is what we see at your gas stations and super markets on those ice freezers.  Of course we wouldn't forget the ice when packing a cooler, but we should keep this in mind as sometimes we forget to add enough ice.  Try to stick as close as possible to a 2:1 contents to ice ratio and make sure your ice is evenly distributed to keep consistent temperatures all around your contents

3. Cooler Colour

This one isn't as much of a concern with Pelican coolers, but it can still make a difference.  Let me start by stating that no matter the colour you do choose for your Pelican cooler, you'll get great ice retention compared to anything else on the market.  But, similar to that hot black car in the summer, your dark coloured cooler will absorb more heat and have to 'work' a little harder to keep the temperature down.  This not be critical for average users, but those looking for maximum ice retention may want to have the extra edge by going with a white cooler.
